THE CRATER OF BEDUGUL

Location
Bedugul is the name of a crater second biggest after Batur. This crater has the form almost resembling a half circle with the length more then 10 kms and width 2 kms. Starting from the southern border of lake Beratan northward with consecutive lakes such as lake Bulian, lake Tamblingan, and one smaller lake located at the westernmost edge of the crater now drained out of water. Some villages located around the crater are the village of Kandang, Candikuning, Mekar Sari and Panca Sari. Next is Desa Candi Kuning with many villages with the name of flowers such as Mekar Sari, Kemuning, and others, and here are also exist Muslim village. Here can be found many small accommodation along the road and at inner part of the villages. In the village of Pancasari is the famous Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club, and popular temple for foreign visitors, Ulun Danu, around which are water activities can be organized such as fishing, paddling, canoeing, water scooter, and speed boat ride. The location of this crater is 59 km from Denpasar

The interest of Bedugul Crater
For most foreign visitors Bedugul is known for Vegetable Market, Ulun Danu Temple, Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club and its accommodation with beautiful panorama, and the trekking activities at the slope of Lake Buyan wall.

Vegetable Market known also as Pasar Kandang, is one of the most complete highland vegetable market with many type of highland green vegetable products, flowery, and greenery. Product such as cabbage, potatoes, corn, juices, bean, onion, marquisas, and many others. Actually most of the products are cultivated around Baturiti area, 3 kms before Bedugul which altitude is lower then Begudul, while flowers are produced locally with various type and sizes. The location of Bedugul which is more then 1000 meters above sea level makes the area is good for to relax in the fresh air with cold temperature.

Bedugul Botanical Garden located 1 km away to the north of the vegetable market is the Botanical Garden with beautiful scenery men made garden under shading of trees and ferns typical of high place. This botanical garden was opened in 1959 and has 154,5 hectares with more then 1187 plants, 320 types of orchids from various areas of Indonesia, birch trees of around 524 types from America, China, Japan, Australia, Africa and Netherlands. A Cyathea garden with various type of ferns, some of which are edible for Balinese and are popular cuisine material just like other vegetables. 104 type of Cactuses from various countries, and 94 plants relating to religious ritual of Balinese, and 84 type of plants used as traditional medicine by Balinese. Many type of orchids can be visited around the area and very beautiful during its flowering season.

Pantai Bedugulknown for its good accommodation of Begugul cottages which is now very old property, and the new one constructed just on the beach of the lake is like a normal hotel. From here many water activities are organized such as fishing, paddling, canoeing, water parachuting, or encircling the lake with speed boat.

Ulun Danu Temple This temple, according to the chronicle of Mengwi kingdom was built by the first king of Mengwi, I Gusti Ngurah Putu around 1634 as the thanks God for his victory against his rivals around the area, or in more correct assumption it might be aimed as Mountain temple of a kingdom, in conjunction with 3 temples belong to the state. The temple is consist of 2 different section. The biggest section is Hindu temple, and at the front is Buddhist temple.

Panca Sari Town bigger traditional market then Kandang, and a famous golf course of Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club. The course with good 4 star hotel is located just at the drop of crater east wall with the high peak of Mount Mangu. The whole wall is evergreen ridges and peaks covered by the smoke every morning or during the rainy season. Golf course is a 18 holes with the most beautiful panorama and cold temperature, colorful flowers and green garden.

Lake Bulian, known also as lake Buyan is a famous place for trekking and off-roading, combined with trekking and rowing outrigger. On the bank of this lake there is an old temple with unique architecture.

Balinese society socially is divided into caste layers, which can be easily known from his/her name to which caste he/she belong. In the past the castes were 4 layers including the Paria ( slave ) which now does not exist anymore in Bali. From this social layers various relations have been built in the society such as level of language, which is very strict in the past, but looser today except some words that attribute or refer the action of the other castes during direct communication are still spoken in rule. Within each caste there is exist kinship tradition which is more or less the same as the common Balinese. Just a short note on the castes and various tittles found in Bali can be summed up as follows: Brahmana Caste, today based on genealogy claims themselves as the group that can reach the highest priesthood, the god server of Hindu in Bali. Kesatria, the ruling class during Balinese kingdom especially between 18th to 1945 AD. Some groups within this caste called themselves as the group of Anak Agung, I Gusti, I Dewa, Cokorda and others.
